How to make homemade sushi rolls

Making homemade sushi rolls can be a fun and rewarding experience. With a few basic ingredients and some simple techniques, you can enjoy fresh, delicious sushi right at home. Here’s how to make your own sushi rolls:

Ingredients:

  • Sushi rice (short-grain rice)
  • Nori (seaweed sheets)
  • Fresh fillings like cucumber, avocado, and fish (such as salmon or tuna), or even cooked ingredients like shrimp or tempura vegetables
  • Rice vinegar, sugar, and salt (for seasoning the rice)
  • Soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger for serving

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Sushi Rice
    Start by rinsing 1 ½ cups of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Then, cook the rice according to package instructions. Once cooked, transfer the rice to a large bowl and gently mix with 3 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Let the rice cool to room temperature while you prepare the fillings.
  2. Prepare the Fillings
    Slice your vegetables and fish into thin strips. For example, slice avocado and cucumber into long, thin pieces. If you’re using fish, ensure it’s fresh and sushi-grade. Alternatively, you can use cooked shrimp, crab, or even vegetarian options like pickled radish or sautéed mushrooms.
  3. Assemble the Sushi Rolls
    Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down. Spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top. Don’t overload the rice—just enough to cover the nori evenly. Arrange your fillings horizontally across the middle of the rice.
  4. Roll the Sushi
    Start at the bottom of the nori sheet and gently roll the sushi mat forward, pressing the roll tightly as you go. Once you reach the top edge of the nori, use a little water to seal the roll.
  5. Cut the Rolls
    Using a sharp knife, slice the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces. Serve immediately with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
